What causes Autism ?

We know there is not just one cause for autism and there is no one type of autism.

Scientists have found a number of gene mutations associated with autism.

A combination of environmental factors, gene mutations and genetics can cause autism. In the presence of a genetic predisposition to autism, stress and environment appear to further increase the child’s risk of autism. The clearest evidence of risk factors include the age you were at the time of conception (both Mum and Dad), Mental illness during pregnancy and difficulties in birth, like oxygen deprivation to the baby’s brain. Its important to know these factors alone don't cause autism rather a combination with genetic risk factors.

ASD can also be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in attention, motor skills and co-ordination, gastrointestinal problems and problems with sleep. On the other hand these children could excel in a lot of areas, such as, mathematics, music and art. A lot of children are good with patterns, puzzles and visual skills.
